Numerous double degree programmes offer the opportunity to obtain a degree from a partner university alongside the RUB degree:

Philology

M.A. Double Degree Option “Romance Studies” with Tours, France

With the intention of giving master students of Romance Studies at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Université de Tours the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the language of their respective partner country, to deepen their intercultural competence and to gain an international perspective on various fields of Romance philology, the two partner universities offer a double degree in Romance Studies. Students of Romance Studies French from both universities can spend their last year of study at the respective partner university and receive a master's degree from the Ruhr-Universität and the Université de Tours. The language of instruction in Tours is French.

B.A. Double Degree Option “Romance Studies” with Oviedo, Spain

Students of both universities can spend their last academic year at the respective partner university. Students receive a bachelor's degree from the Ruhr-Universität and the Universidad de Oviedo. The language of instruction in Oviedo is Spanish.

M.A. Double Degree Programme “German Studies” with Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Double Degree Master Programme “AMBO” offers the opportunity to gain a German and a Dutch Master's degree in German Studies in two years. In addition to international experience gained, students also benefit from the intercultural orientation of the programme and the practical application of study content , since internships form an integral part of the master's programme “German Studies AMBO”. The students spend the first two semesters in Amsterdam and the last two semesters in Bochum. The language of instruction is German in both countries.

M.A. Double Degree Programme “Integrative Sprachdidaktik des Deutschen“ with Uppsala, Sweden

This degree programme combines aspects of German as a first, second and foreign language by relating both scientific, subject-didactic and practical teaching perspectives, thus enabling a well-founded analysis of teaching projects and situations as well as the concept of a strong research didactics of German. The successful completion of the study programme leads to a differentiated knowledge of German teaching from intercultural, scientific and didactic perspectives. The RUBSALA study programme offers students of Ruhr-Universität and Uppsala University (UU) in Sweden a German-Swedish double master's degree in German. As part of a four-semester master's programme, students complete one academic year (two semesters) in Uppsala and one academic year (two semesters) in Bochum and receive a valid M.A. degree from both UU and Ruhr-Universität upon successful completion of their studies. The language of instruction is German.

M.A. Double Degree Programme “Russian Culture” with Moscow, Russia

This programme was developed by the Slavistik/Lotman Institute in close cooperation with its long-standing Russian partner institute, the Higher School for European Cultures of the Russian State University for the Humanities of Moscow (RGGU) as a new model of networked and integrated German-Russian education and qualification. The programme is offered in Bochum and Moscow with an identical module structure and is open to students from both partner universities. The focus of the training is on the German-Russian language practice and the treatment of cultural and socio-cultural issues. Obtaining a double degree from the Ruhr-Universität and the RGGU requires a stay of at least one semester at the respective partner university.

M.A. Double Degree Programme “Comparative Studies” with Bergamo, Italy

This M.A. study programme with the University of Bergamo aims to enable students to intensify their experience and competencies in the field of intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange. Students will receive an M.A. certificate from each university. The study programme, which is part of the 1-subject M.A.Comparative Studies, integrates two one-year study phases at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Universitá degli Studi Bergamo. The languages of instruction are German and Italian.

M.A. Joint Degree Programme “Film and Audiovisual Media” with various countries

The degree programme offers a more in-depth study of media studies with a focus on the history, theory, aesthetics and economics of film and audiovisual media. It offers the opportunity to work on scientific issues in an international context and to deepen competences in different languages and cultures. The programme takes place in cooperation with 12 different international universities. Of the cooperation partners, students choose two other universities in addition to their home university. The first and fourth semester take place at the Ruhr-Universität, the 2nd and 3rd semesters are studied at two different foreign partner universities. The languages of instruction are German, English and the languages of the partner countries in which the stays abroad take place.

Social Sciences

M.A. Joint-Degree “Gender Studies” with Graz, Austria

The 1-subject MA Joint Degree “Gender Studies" developed in cooperation with the Karl-Franzens-University Graz conveys various disciplinary perspectives, theories and methods that complement each other in their respective subject matter and can be related to one another under a comprehensive gender perspective. Under an international and in particular European perspective students acquire gender competences that are becoming increasingly relevant and therefore increasingly in demand against the background of current cultural, social, political and economic transformation processes. In order to obtain the M.A. awarded jointly by the Ruhr-Universität and the University of Graz and equally recognized in both countries, part of the study must be undertaken at the University of Graz.

Law

B.A. and M.A. Double Degree Programme “National and European Economic Law” with Tours, France

The law faculties of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Université François Rabelais de Tours offer a joint legal integrated degree programme designed to prepare a new generation of lawyers for the complex and demanding job market. The students participating in this integrated German-French bachelor's and master's degree programme in national and European commercial law are to be specially prepared for the peculiarities of legal cases and situations with German-French and European connections. Germany and France, as two economically important states in the European Union and internationally, offer a rewarding field of activity for economically oriented lawyers. Available as a double Bachelor and Master. In the bachelor phase students enrolled at Ruhr-Univeristät spend four semesters at Ruhr-Universität and two at the Université de Tours. During the master phase, students spend two semesters in Bochum and two in Tours.

History

B.A. and M.A. Double Degree Programme “History” with Tours, France

This integrated history course of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Université François Rabelais Tours offers students the opportunity to broaden their cultural and intellectual horizons and through its intercultural perspective for the demands of an international job market equips graduates with intercultural competencies and required international perspective. The course plan stipulates that students study at their home university for two semesters and transfer to the partner university for the third and fourth semester. All students spend their fifth semester together in Tours and sixth in Bochum. Master students should plan to spend the first semester in Tours and the second in Bochum. Their third semester is spend at the partner university and their fourth semester at their home university. The language of instruction in Tours is French.

Medicine

M.Sc. Double Degree Programme “Molecular and Development Stem Cell Biology” with Jinan, China

Stem cells have an outstanding influence on almost all disciplines of life sciences that make organisms the subject of their research. It is therefore already foreseeable today that there will be a great need in the near future for young scientists who have to cope with a highly interdisciplinary field of research. The aim of the Double Degree Programme ISTEM in partnership with the University of Jinan in China is therefore to offer a highly interdisciplinary master's degree programme oriented towards cutting-edge research and current markets. This programme combines classical disciplines from the fields of cell biology, histology, biochemistry and pathology with current topics in epigenetics, bioinformatics and developmental biology in order to offer students the widest possible understanding of the innovative approaches of translational medicine. The acquisition of a Master of Science degree from Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Jinan University requires students to spend the first year at Ruhr-Universität and the second at Jinan University.

Geography

M.Sc. Double Degree Programme “Transformation of Urban Landscapes” with Shanghai, Chinaa

The fundamental academic goal of the master's programme “Transformation of Urban Landscapes (TuL)” is the acquisition of an in-depth understanding of transformation processes and an in-depth knowledge of system contexts. In addition, the brokering of an extended strategy and process knowledge is a special focus. This programme is designed to qualify its graduates to become active in the field of urban landscape transformation. Students of Ruhr-Universität and students of Tongji University (Shanghai) acquire competence in the economic and ecological analysis of urban structures and processes. The first academic year (1st and 2nd semester) takes place at Ruhr-Universität and the second academic year (3rd and 4th semester) of the master's programme takes place at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) of Tongji University in Shanghai. The language of instruction in China is English.

Economics

M.Sc. Double Degree Option “Economics and Finance” with Shenzhen, China

This double degree programme is not a separate degree programme but a double degree option integrated into Ruhr-Universität’s M.Sc. Economics and the PHBS Master in Finance, which annually attracts a limited number of outstanding M.Sc. Economics students. The goal is to equip business and finance experts with intercultural competence for the international job market. The curriculum requires that the first year of study is spent at Ruhr-Universität and the second at the PHBS in Shenzen. The language of instruction in China is English.

M.Sc. Double Degree Option “Financial Services” with Shanghai, China

So far, this double degree option is only available for Tongji University students. After three semesters at Tongji University and three semesters at Ruhr-Universität, students can obtain a M.Sc. degree from both universities.

M.Sc. Double Degree Option “Management and Economics” with Norwich, UK

This double degree programme is not a separate degree programme but a double degree option for which outstanding M.Sc. Economics and M.Sc. Management and Economics students of Ruhr-Universität can apply for. Selected students then have the option of a double degree M.Sc. in Management and Economics at Ruhr-Universität and the University of East Anglia (UEA). The curriculum requires that the first year of study is spent at Ruhr-Universität and the second at UEA in Norwich. The language of instruction in England is English.

Mechanical Engineering

M.Sc. Double Degree Option “Mechanical Engineering” with Shanghai, China

CDHK students of Tongji University have the opportunity to earn a double master's degree from both universities in Production and Automotive Engineering after attending three semesters at Tongji University and three semesters at RUB. RUB’s Mechanical engineering students can obtain a double degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialisation in Design, Vehicle and Energy Engineering from both RUB and Tongji University. Students must have passed all of their first and second semester exams at RUB. Following this, they must write their master's thesis, in cooperation with a professor from Bochum, in China and attend further courses there.

International Cooperation

Joint European Master Degree Programme “Humanitarian Action” with various countries

The master’s degree in Humanitarian Aid is a Joint European Master's Degree that provides excellent cross-university and interdisciplinary academic education to individuals working or intending to work in the field of humanitarian aid. The programme combines science-based theoretical knowledge with the acquisition of practical skills and relies on the internationally renowned Network on Humanitarian Action (NOHA), which is supported by twelve European universities. Students have the opportunity to complete part of their Humanitarian Aid study at at least one of the universities participating in this Joint European Master Degree programme. The language of instruction throughout the programme is English. Some basic knowledge of Spanish and French is also an advantage. There are tuition fees for this degree programme.

Joint European Master Degree Programme “Human Rights and Democratisation” with various countriesenen Partnerländern

The Joint European Master Degree Program Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA) is a one-year master’s programme aimed at providing technical and practical experience in human rights and democratisation. This study programme is carried out jointly by 41 European universities and consists of the following subjects: International Relations, Law, Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Political Science and Sociology. The course plan requires that the first semester is spent at the University of Venice and the second at one of the participating universities. The language of instruction is English.

M.A. Double Degree Option “Development Management” with Capetown, South Africa

This three-semester master's programme "Development Management" offered by RUB’s Institute for Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) offers students a hands-on approach throughout their studies. Students are confronted with practical problems regarding the planning, monitoring and evaluation of development programmes and projects. Particularly outstanding students of "Development Management" have the opportunity to obtain a master's degree from UWC in addition to the master's degree from RUB.

Joint European Master Degree Programm: An independent degree programme allowing the acquisition a joint degree from Ruhr-Universität and one or more partner universities. The programme usually also provides EU scholarships.
