PROMOS: Internship or Study Trip Abroad

PROMOS is a scholarship programme granted by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft (BMBF) and launched by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Ruhr-Universität Bochum administers its PROMOS funds on behalf of the DAAD and awards scholarships to students who plan to study, intern or research abroad for up to six months. Thus, the above mentioned institutions contribute to the increasing mobility of students that was originally initiated by the Bologna Process.

All full-time students enrolled on one of RUB's degree programmes (Bachelor, Master, Diplom, Magister and Staatsexamen) are eligible to receive PROMOS (Student Mobility Support Programme) funding. Applicants need to be either German citizens or persons who are on a par with Germans according to § 8 Absatz 1 Ziffer 2 ff., Absatz 2, 2a und 3 BAföG. International degree-seeking students enrolled at RUB can be funded in all subprogrammes, as long as they do not intend to stay in their home country. Doctoral students may only participate in the subprogramme "Study Trips Worldwide".

The first application deadline (of three application deadlines in total) for the PROMOS funding year 2018 is 16 October 2017, 12pm, for sojourns starting between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018.

Please note that there are always three application deadlines per PROMOS funding year. The next two deadlines are scheduled for March 2018 and June 2018. However, it is only possible to apply once within a PROMOS year. Please weigh which application deadline would be the most suitable for you. Important note: excluded from the third application round are study abroad stays at RUB partner universities.

What types of sojourns will be funded at RUB?

Studying abroad for one semester (3 - 6 months) at one of RUB's partner universities via an exchange programme from either the International Office or the faculties/institutes (excluded are those universities located in the 33 ERASMUS countries). The funding period starts on 1 January 2018 and ends on 28 February 2019. Grantees receive a monthly scholarship and one-time travel allowance (which depends on the host country, see "PROMOS Funding Rates 2017" on the right; PROMOS funding rates for 2018 will be published by the DAAD soon).
