PROMOS: Funding for Stays Abroad

About the Programme

PROMOS is a scholarship programme granted by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft (BMBF) and launched by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Ruhr-Universität Bochum administers its PROMOS funds on behalf of the DAAD and awards scholarships to students who plan to study, intern or research abroad for up to six months. Thus, the above mentioned institutions contribute to the increasing mobility of students that was originally initiated by the Bologna Process.

All full-time students enrolled on one of RUB's degree programmes (Bachelor, Master, Diplom, Magister and Staatsexamen) are eligible to receive PROMOS (Student Mobility Support Programme) funding. Applicants need to be either German citizens or persons who are on a par with Germans according to § 8 Absatz 1 Ziffer 2 ff., Absatz 2, 2a und 3 BAföG. International degree-seeking students enrolled at RUB can be funded in all subprogrammes, as long as they do not intend to stay in their home country. Doctoral students may only participate in the subprogramme "Study Trips Worldwide".

⯈ Remark on the documents “PROMOS funding rates 2020” and PROMOS funding rates 2021”:
The column “Aufenthaltspauschale” (one-time allowance) exclusively refers to study trips, not to studies abroad, internships or research stays for thesis writing. The column "Teilstipendium Studiengebühren (Höchstsatz)" (partial scholarship for study fees (maximum rate)) is not relevant because within the RPOMOS programme at Ruhr-Universität Bochum only stays at partner universities, which are tuition-free.

Submission Deadlines

Latest call for submission: 1 November 2020

There are three submission deadlines per PROMOS funding year:

⯈ 1st November
(for internships, research stays - thesis only - and study trips in the upcoming year as well as for a semester abroad in the next summer term)

⯈ 1st March
(for internships, research stays - thesis only - and study trips in the current year as well as for a semester abroad in the next winter term)

⯈ 1st June
(for internships, research stays - thesis only - and study trips in the current year as well as for a semester abroad in the next winter term)

Please note that within a year it is only possible to apply once for PROMOS funding for the same stay. Nevertheless it is possible to apply for funding for different stays. Please consider the minimum and maximum fundiing periods. Within each study period (Bachelor or Master) students may receive PROMOS funding for a total of six months. Please weigh which application deadline would be the most suitable for you. Within the submission rounds in March and June, also running internships or research stays (Bachelor's or Master's thesis) can be funded, provided that you submit the application completed and on time before the end of your stay.

PROMOS Criteria for Selection

All applicants are evaluated by a RUB internal selection committee consisting of members of various faculties. Approximately four weeks after the submission deadline, candidates will be determined in a selection meeting organised and coordinated by the International Office. The selection is based on the following criteria:

⯈ Academic records (40%)
⯈ Purpose of the stay (25%)
⯈ Motivation (12%)
⯈ Language skills (10%)
⯈ Letter of recommendation (8%)
⯈ Academic progress and potential (2%)
⯈ Extracurricular activities and interests (2%)
⯈ Formal requirements on the application documents (1%)

Usually it takes about six weeks to receive a response.
